NICE and NHS menopause guidance updates, dated
This page records when NICE's menopause guideline (NG23) and NHS prescription-cost policy for HRT last changed, each entry dated and linked to the official source. It tells you WHEN something was published or amended and WHAT TOPIC it touched. It does not restate or interpret the clinical recommendations themselves; read those directly on NICE's site.
Timeline of changes
| Date | Body | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| NICE | Guideline NG23, "Menopause: identification and management", first published The guideline this tracker follows. Establishes NICE's formal recommendations on diagnosing and managing menopause and perimenopause in primary and secondary care. Read the official update → | |
| NICE | NG23 evidence reviewed; recommendations updated on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), managing genitourinary symptoms, and the effects of HRT on specific health outcomes A scheduled evidence review, not a full rewrite. Read NICE's own updated recommendations for what actually changed in each of those three areas. Read the official update → | |
| NICE | Recommendation 1.8.4 amended and a new recommendation 1.8.5 added, to align advice on unscheduled vaginal bleeding while taking systemic HRT The most recent change to NG23 as of this page's last check. Read the recommendation itself on NICE's site rather than relying on this summary. Read the official update → | |
| NHS Business Services Authority / DHSC | HRT Prescription Prepayment Certificate (HRT PPC) introduced A dedicated prepayment certificate covering unlimited listed HRT items for 12 months, separate from the general prescription PPC. See our own cost comparison. Read the official update → · HRT PPC cost comparison | |
| DHSC / Community Pharmacy England | NHS prescription charge frozen at £9.90 per item for the second year running; the HRT PPC and standard PPC costs frozen alongside it A charge/cost update, not a clinical change. Read the official update → |
Why this page exists, and its limits
NICE guidance is not static. NG23 has been reviewed and amended more than once since it was first published, and NHS prescription-cost policy changes on its own schedule. Knowing that a change happened, and when, matters even before you read what the change actually says: it tells you whether the advice you were given six months ago, or read somewhere else online, is still current.
This page deliberately stops at "what changed and when." For what NICE actually now recommends, or what your own care should look like, read NICE's guidance directly or talk to your GP or a registered clinician. We check this page's dates against NICE's and NHSBSA's own published update pages; if you spot a change we've missed, tell us via contact.
